Kevin Peter Petersen was born on 27th June 1980 is a South African born English cricketer. He is a right handed batsman who plays for England. He was captain of the England Test and One day International teams from 4th August 2008 to 7th January 2009. He resigned after just three tests and nine one day internationals. On 31st May 2012 he got retired from all forms of International limited-over’s cricket.

His English mother gave him eligibility to play for England. He made his international debut in the One Day International Match against Zimbabwe in 2004 and his test match debut in the 2005 Ashes series against Australia the following year.

Peterson gained several awards for his performances in the 2005 season. He was named both the ICC ODI Player of the Year and Emerging Player of the Year in 2005.  He was one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the Year for his role in the successful Ashes series against Australia.

Peterson got married to Jessica Taylor on 29th December 2007 at St Andrew’s Church in Castle Combe. Jessica gave birth to the couple’s first child a baby son Dylan on 11th May 2010. On the arrival of his son Peterson said “This really is the most amazing experience of my life”.

On June 17th 2010 Peterson announced his wish to leave Hampshire. He subsequently joined surrey on loan for the remainder of the 2010 English country cricket season after being dropped by England due to a poor run of form before joining the club permanently from the 2011 season onwards.

Peterson became the fastest batsman to reach both 1000 and 2000 runs in One Day International cricket. He was the quickest in terms of time to reach 5000 test runs. He became only the third English batsman to top the ICC One Day International rankings in March 2007.  After a century against South Africa in July 2008 he was called by The Times to be “the most complete batsman in Cricket”.

Peterson returned from injury after the 2009-10 winter tour of South Africa.  However the first innings of 99 in the first test and a series clinching score of 74 not out in the second and a 167 not out with Alastair Cook saw Peterson return to much more respectable figures.

In the 2010 ICC World Twenty 20, the Peterson knock was vital in helping England secure a 7 wicket victory and the first ever major ICC tournament victory. After the match Peterson was named man of the series for his vital contributions with the bat. He was the second highest run scorer with 248 runs at an average of 62.00 and a strike rate of 137.77.
